Canucks choose who they want in White House

Hillary Clinton for U.S. president, eh?

That's who Canadians would like to see in the White House, according to a Nanos Research-Policy Options Magazine released yesterday. In the poll of Canadians interested in the U.S. presidential race, Hillary Clinton and Barrack Obama were heads above the three Republican contenders, with the idea of the first female president getting the most support.

In the survey of 795 Canadians who were asked to choose a favourite for president, Clinton topped the total of five Democratic and Republican candidates with 40.7% of those queried, with Obama coming second at 36.4%.

The two Democrats ranked similarly when the choice was between Democrats only -- Clinton got 45.7% of the Canadian vote and Obama 41.7%.

Although 44.8% of those surveyed for Republican favourites chose John McCain, compared to 9.1% for Mike Huckabee and 8.3% for Mitt Romney, the trio trailed far behind the two Democrats.

LAUDS 'COURAGE'

At her Mount Pleasant Ave. home, Isabel Jesse McCain, 83, said, "I watch everything" and lauds the "courage" of Arizona's senator with the same last name.

"He has a good job and is backed by a lot of rich people," she said, adding that's what is needed to be victorious.

Ottawa poll firm CEO Nik Nanos said the U.S. presidential race is being talked about by Canadians more than previous races.

He predicted the outcome will have a major impact on Canadians, diplomatically, economically and socially.

"A lot of Canadians see this as a bit of a watershed election," Nanos said. "Any change in the U.S. will have a direct impact on what we do in Canada." In addition to the U.S. struggle with its military role and economy, he said a woman and a black candidate have given the race, especially Democrats, a "star quality."
